1972 Rolex Datejust Ref. 1603 ‘Confetti’ with Double Punched Papers

$9,000.00

The Rolex Datejust reference 1603 is one of the most emblematic expressions of Rolex’s mid-century design language. Produced throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it paired the classic 36 mm Oyster case with the distinctive engine-turned bezel, striking a perfect balance between sportiness and elegance. While the 1603 was offered with a wide range of dial options, only a handful transcend convention. Among them, the so-called “Confetti” dial stands apart as one of the rarest and most visually captivating variants ever fitted to a Datejust—an almost playful anomaly within an otherwise restrained catalogue.

Confetti dials are defined by their subtly speckled surface, where tiny colored flecks are scattered across the dial, creating depth and texture that shifts with the light. Produced in extremely small numbers and for a very limited period, these dials were never a commercial staple. Most have not survived intact: aging, moisture, or heavy wear often compromised the surface or lume. As a result, truly clean examples with original, undisturbed lume plots are exceptionally hard to find, placing Confetti dials among the most coveted Datejust configurations for seasoned collectors.

Offered here is a 1972 Rolex Datejust Ref. 1603 ‘Confetti’, preserved in remarkable condition and accompanied by double punched guarantee papers. The dial is completely flawless, with its rare Confetti surface fully intact and original tritium lume plots that have aged to a rich pumpkin patina, perfectly matched by the original handset. The case remains strong, retaining visible factory brushing, with honest wear and signs of previous polishing consistent with use. It is fitted to its original Rolex Jubilee 6251 H folded-link bracelet, date-coded 3/71, showing normal stretch and wear for its age. Completing the set are the highly desirable double punched papers, along with the original wallet and translation leaflet—an unusually complete and compelling example of one of the Datejust’s most elusive and charming dial variants.
