1978 Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 with ‘Salmon’ dial

$8,000.00

The Rolex Datejust reference 1601 ran through the 1960s and 1970s as one of Rolex’s most prolifically varied references, offering a near-endless matrix of dial configurations beneath its familiar 36mm case and engine-turned bezel. Most were produced in volumes sufficient to ensure their survival in reasonable numbers. The salmon dial was not. Among the rarest color configurations offered across the 1601’s long production run, salmon occupies a particular place — a warm, peachy-pink tone that sits at the precise intersection of rose and gold, catching warm light in a way that no other Datejust dial color quite replicates. It was never a high-volume option, and surviving examples in honest, unmolested condition are genuinely difficult to source.

This 1978 example is in lovely condition. The salmon surface is warm and coherent, its color intact and reading beautifully against the applied indices and black printings. The tritium lume plots are full and aged to a light, even hue — understated, appropriate, and entirely consistent with the dial’s delicate color palette and condition. The original tritium handset matches throughout. The case is strong, sharp edges present, light signs of wear consistent with its age. It rides on a Jubilee 6251H folded-links bracelet with 55 end links and a 3/69 clasp date — normal wear and minimal stretch for its age.

A salmon 1601 in this condition is not something you plan to find. It simply appears.
