Regarding (1970s Omega Seamaster Chronograph Ref. 176.005 ‘Jedi’) The ‘Jedi’ nickname in the Omega world has an origin story as entertaining as it is instructive. It begins with Chuck Maddox, the legendary Omega chronograph enthusiast who in the 1990s assigned Star Wars character names to a series of rare and distinctive references — the shield-cased 145.023 became the Darth Vader, its silver counterpart the Anakin Skywalker, and the rounded shield-cased 145.024 became the Jedi. The name was earned: the 145.024’s case had a genuinely otherworldly quality that justified the association. Then, in the mid-2000s, a prominent auction house catalogued a ref. 176.005 as a ‘so-called Jedi’ — a mislabelling that propagated across the market with remarkable speed, attaching the nickname permanently to a reference that had no official claim to it. The 176.005 is not the true Jedi. It is, however, a genuinely remarkable watch in its own right: a large cushion-case automatic chronograph powered by the calibre 1040 — Omega’s first automatic chronograph movement, developed in collaboration with Lemania — housed in a case with a space-age presence so pronounced that the mislabelling, however accidental, has always felt at least partially justified. The ref. 176.005 radiates a 1970s technical confidence that few contemporary chronographs could match, and in the silver dial configuration with turquoise accent colour it is among the most visually arresting versions the reference produced.

The silver sunburst dial on this 1970s example here is in excellent condition, clean and coherent, the white subregisters providing crisp contrast against the sunburst ground. The inner tachymetre bezel is equally sharp. The hour marker plots and hands have aged to a warm, even cream — tritium lume matched throughout in settled patina. The chronograph sweeping hand and left subregister preserve their original turquoise color in vivid, saturated tone — a detail that gives the whole composition an electric brightness that no amount of description fully prepares you for in person. The unpolished cushion-type case retains its sharp geometry throughout, normal signs of wear consistent with its age. Original signed crown present. On a racing-style leather strap in matching blue with stainless steel Omega buckle — a pairing that plays directly into the turquoise accent and feels entirely deliberate.
