1955 Universal Genève Polerouter Ref. 20217-3 ‘Bumper’ with Silver dial

The Universal Genève Polerouter story begins not in a watchmaker’s workshop but in a cockpit. Developed in close collaboration with Scandinavian Airlines System for use by SAS pilots flying the newly inaugurated polar routes between Europe and North America, the Polerouter was conceived as a practical instrument for a specific and demanding purpose — a watch that could perform reliably in the magnetic field conditions generated by the navigation equipment aboard early commercial aircraft. The solution was a movement built around the microrotor, a winding architecture in which the oscillating weight sits flush within the movement plate rather than sweeping across its full diameter, allowing for a dramatically thinner profile than any conventional automatic of the era could achieve. The earliest Polerouters — those from the mid-1950s predating the Gerald Genta-designed case that would define the reference’s later and more celebrated chapter — used a bumper automatic mechanism, where the oscillating weight bounces between two spring buffers rather than rotating freely, a transitional technology that bridges the manual-wind era and the full-rotor future. These earliest examples are the least discussed and most historically significant Polerouters of all, and they are considerably scarcer than the references that followed.

This 1955 Polerouter example wears its age with quiet elegance. The silver sunburst dial has aged to a warm, even cream — no lume plots to interrupt the clean surface, correct for this reference by the way, just the soleil finish shifting between bright and warm depending on the light, the original dauphine hands sitting against it. The case is thick and most probably unpolished, its surfaces carrying normal signs of wear that speak of genuine use over seven decades without intervention. The screw-back case back is equally honest — all engravings perfectly visible, normal tool marks and wear present as expected. Original signed crown. Original signed acrylic crystal. On an unworn leather strap with steel buckle.

A bumper Polerouter from the very first chapter — before Genta, before the microrotor, before the legend fully formed.
