1969 Seiko Professional Diver Ref. 6159-7001 ‘Hi-Beat’ Unpolished

$6,500.00

In the late 1960s, while Swiss brands were refining the language of professional dive watches, Seiko was quietly redefining the category altogether. The Seiko Professional Diver reference 6159-7001, introduced in 1968 and produced in extremely limited numbers until 1970, was not just Japan’s answer to the Submariner—it was a technological leap forward. Powered by a high-frequency automatic movement beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, this was the world’s first hi-beat professional diver, conceived as a no-compromise instrument for saturation diving. With its monobloc case, screw-down crown, and 300-meter depth rating, the 6159 laid the foundation for everything that would follow in Seiko’s professional dive lineage, from the later 6159-7010 to the legendary Marinemaster line.

What sets the 6159-7001 apart is the way engineering takes precedence over ornament. The case is bold, angular, and unapologetically functional, while the glossy dial—with its gilt printing and applied markers—retains just enough refinement to remind you that this was a flagship model. Produced for only a short period, many examples were used hard, serviced aggressively, or modified over time. As a result, original, unpolished specimens have become increasingly elusive, especially those retaining correct lume, hands, and bezel components.

The example offered here is a 1969 Seiko Professional Diver Ref. 6159-7001, preserved in honest, unpolished condition. The glossy dial is flawless, with crisp gilt printing and original tritium hour markers that have aged to a soft, light creamy patina, perfectly matched by the original handset. The rotating dive bezel remains in good condition with minor signs of use, still fitted with its original tritium pip, now beautifully aged to a matching tone. The case is strong and untouched, with sharp lines and lugs that show only the expected wear of a true tool watch. Finished on a tan leather strap with a stainless steel buckle, this is a rare opportunity to own one of the most important dive watches ever made—an early professional instrument from Seiko that helped shape the future of modern dive watch engineering.
