The Datejust reference 1601 ran through the 1960s and 1970s as one of Rolex’s most enduring and quietly varied references — 36mm, engine-turned bezel, and an almost inexhaustible matrix of dial configurations that ranged from the purely functional to the genuinely beautiful. Among them, the silver sunburst ‘Pie-Pan’ stands apart: a stepped dial architecture where the outer chapter ring sits elevated above the inner surface, creating a shadow line that gives the dial a sculptural depth entirely absent from flat-dial contemporaries. Combined with the silver sunburst finish — which shifts from bright to warm depending on the angle of light — and the large applied tritium lume plots, it produces a dial that manages to be both formal and sporty, dressy and wearable, without ever committing fully to either.
